SEOUL, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- The South Korean government has chosen Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. to construct the South Korean navy's next generation frigates.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration chose after reviewing competing bids from three companies, Yonhap news agency reported Tuesday.
DAPA announced that the government would present the formal contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. by the end of the year, with the first vessel to be delivered to the South Korean navy in 2014.
DAPA said that the upgraded frigate class will incorporate advanced anti-ship, anti-air and anti-submarine weaponry, electronic and software capabilities far exceeding those compared to ships currently in the country's maritime forces.
The new warships are designed to replace South Korea's indigenous and aging fleet of Ulsan-class frigates and Pohang-class patrol combat corvettes. The South Korean navy Pohang-class Cheonan corvette was sunk March 26, allegedly by a torpedo fired by a North Korean vessel. That was one of the reasons South Korean government decided to build more modern warships to guard against future aggression.
According to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff and U.S. Forces Korea, Monday South Korea and the U.S. Navy began a joint anti-submarine warfare exercise in the waters west of the Korean Peninsula.
